Why Your Small Business Website Isn't Showing Up on Google

The most common reasons a Knoxville small business website does not rank on Google, explained in plain English. Plus the boring fixes that actually work.

A business owner calls and says some version of the same sentence every month.

“I Googled my business and we are not on the first page.”

There are about seven reasons this happens. None of them are mysterious. Most of them are fixable in an afternoon. And almost none of them require paying someone six hundred dollars a month for “SEO services.”

Let us go through them.

You are Googling your own name and you are not logged out

Start here. If you are searching from your own office, on your own wifi, on a browser that knows you, Google is doing things to the results you are seeing that a stranger will not experience.

Open a private window. Search as if you were a customer in Knoxville who had never heard of you. That is the result that matters. Everything else is a hallucination.

You have no Google Business Profile, or it is neglected

For local search, the profile is more important than the website for some queries. If you do not have one set up, claimed, and kept current, you are invisible on Google Maps, which is where most of the “near me” traffic comes from.

This is a free fix. It is also, somehow, the thing most small businesses have not done.

Your website does not say what you do in the words your customers use

Google has to read your site and figure out what it is about. If your home page headline is “Crafting Moments Since 2007” and you run a bakery, Google has no idea you are a bakery. Neither does anyone skimming the results.

Say what you do. In the words customers type. Bakery. Knoxville. Wedding cakes. Custom orders. The language on the page should match the language in the search.

There is a whole industry built on making this more mysterious than it is. It is not.

Nobody has ever linked to your site

Google decides how much to trust your site partly by who else links to it. A site that has been around for two years and is linked by the Chamber of Commerce, a local newspaper, three suppliers, and four happy clients will rank higher than an identical site with zero incoming links.

You do not need to buy links. You need to be listed in the places your industry already lives. Directories, associations, local press, partners. Most of these are free.

Your site is too slow or broken on phones

Google ranks faster, mobile-friendly sites higher. A slow site, or a site that is unreadable on a phone, gets punished. Most small business sites built more than four years ago fall into this bucket without anyone noticing.

You just launched

Google takes a few weeks to figure out a new site. Sometimes longer. If your site went live last Thursday and you are not on page one yet, that is not a ranking problem. That is physics.

Give it six to eight weeks before you panic.

You are trying to rank for a word that everyone wants

“Dentist” is hard. “Dentist in Farragut that takes Delta Dental and has Saturday hours” is much easier. The second one is also closer to what real customers actually type when they are ready to book.

Broad terms belong to big companies with marketing budgets. You win at the edges, where the searches are specific and the competition is thin. That is where real customers live anyway.

What actually moves the needle

In rough order of impact for a small Knoxville business.

Claim and maintain a Google Business Profile. Rewrite the home page in the words customers use. Get listed in three or four local and industry directories. Make sure the site is fast and works on phones. Write a few specific pages or posts that answer questions your customers actually ask. Wait.

That is most of it. The rest is noise.
